What is a learning management system(LMS)?

 

A learning management system is a software application platform that performs functions like delivery, management, result tracking and report generation of online courses and programs.

Why use an LMS?

 

It is good for businesses and educational institutions to teach online courses that are available all the time to the users. It helps track how each user is progressing through the various courses. It can be used to quickly customize the courses for learners. The ability to track individual progress can help an organization manage its individual goals.

How the training content is going to be delivered?

 

Instructor-led training: People meet in groups to meet the trainer and have an in-person training session.

Online meetings: Learners meet online using a video/audio conference capability and the trainer takes the class online.

Online self-paced training: Learners have access to archives of videos, audio, and notes and they learn at a pace that is comfortable to them.

Finding out if the system is compliant with the present standards of e-learning.

 

To do that one must ensure that the LMS is both SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) and AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-based Training Committee) compatible. Hence the content will be viewable from any LMS.

Does the LMS fit well with a CRM or a CMS?

 

One can use CMS  with LMS to give extra features to the website, for example, a chat screen for social interaction or other webpages or even a WordPress unit. It adds to the LMS by making it fun and interactive.

Choosing technology.

 

Choosing technology can be a little confusing as there are many. Amongst the open-source ones, Moodle is the most widely used one. Microsoft has one called SharePoint LMS, otherwise, there are Litmos and NetExam.

The interface has to be customizable so that the appearance can be modified. Some LMS's offer easily customizable programs that require virtually no programming skills. The interface also has to be easy to use and navigate.

Audience

 

The LMS should be available to the audience through many different platforms through the internet, for example, laptop computers, iPhones, iPods, iPad, tablets, etc. Due to the continued growth of the use of mobile phones in schools and offices, they have become a large share of the LMS platforms.

Hosted vs self-hosted

 

A hosted LMS is cloud-based which is hosted by the software provider. It provides 24x7 service and full backups every night. A self-hosted LMS is done by the organization itself. It works during business hours and emergencies. This can be done only if the company has sufficient resources to provide support.

Social Learning Tools

 

Social learning tools such as interactive chat between the users and message discussion boards discussing the study are encouraged to be kept on the LMS site. It increases the learner's engagement and interest.

Search

 

Many LMS's offer ways of searching in its database by keywords, phrases, time and date, etc.

Automatic student registration

 

The best method of enrolment is automatic online enrolment instead of doing the tedious paperwork necessary for student registration. It allows students to check up course descriptions before enrolling for a better understanding of what is being offered.

 

 

 

Transcripts and certificates

 

LMS systems should allow learners access to their grades so that they can check the grades and become aware of the trend in their performance and regularly update themselves accordingly, to keep a realistic academic target in mind.

 

Automatic reporting

 

LMS's should be able to generate reports on the progress of the learner. It must be capable of making reports of the marks of the learner and the patterns and progressions of those marks over time into another platform like Microsoft Excel.
